Nasir Bartley: WP2 - Elevator Pitch

Hi how are you today? It is an honor finally meeting you. My name is Nasir Bartley, I am a first year student at Penn State Abington and my discipline is Mechanical Engineering. I’ve looked into your past robotics contests and it looks great. Who wouldn’t wants to design a robot to do things such as play basketball, or put out a flame, or even follow a trail? I will like to take it to a different level. I was thinking me and could work on an ACURA project that involves knowledge from ME and RE. I will love to work with you to see how we can robots to design more efficient automobiles than Human Beings. For a start I’ve done some research on this and found two efficient methods to help bring this idea to life. We can try to improve robotic machining accuracy through experimental error investigation and modular compensation, and improve them for proactive ergonomics design. Hope you’re looking forward to doing this project with me. Thank you for your time.

Nasir Bartley WP2 - PB2B

1. Article 1: Improving robotic machining accuracy through experimental error investigation and modular compensation
Article 2: Improving digital human modelling for proactive ergonomics in design

2. For Article number one, the paper analyzes the relevant sources of errors when machining with industrial robots so that they can find ways to improve the use of the robots.
  • The two main materials they used were robot controllers and mechanical chains to analyze the experiments, then it backlashed.
  • Based on the analysis, the backlash can be identified as being most effective. The robot kinematics and the calibration of the work cell can improve positioning accuracy and result also in better precision in machining.
  • The machining experiments can be better if the improvements that can be achieved using the different proposed compensation method are also the general cell set-up and the selected machining strategy have an important influence both on the accuracy and the quality.
For Article number two, this article attempted to outline some of the major issues that has to be addressed to improve the functionality of existing DHM tools.
  • The thesis is “that only when valid postures and motions are available to a designer using a DHM will the biomechanical and other ergonomics analysis model predictions be correct.”
  • Digital human modelling is providing the necessary technology to allow a designer to simulate different sets of manual tasks. The request by designers to use these human graphic simulations for making a new workplace or vehicle design is growing.
  • One thing that was bad was that these potential users of this technology did not have enough time or knowledgeable experience in ergonomics to understand the ergonomics and the outcome predictions provided by existing DHM tools.
  • They believed that research on human motion and biomechanical are capable to be performed in ways that provide predictable and valid models that can be able to be processed with the existing DHM tools.
3. For Article number one, the conventions were Robotic machining, Robot dynamics, Robot modelling, Error compensation, and Optical tracking

  • Affordances were that they can get better results if they used a different approach at the experiment using the COMET approach basis.
  • They would have to make their results more imperfect to get more realistic results.
  • Constraints was that they had to make sure their results were realistic because if they used results from the experiment through only technology and fully relied on it, then the results would be too perfect for real life
  • The audience is other engineers with the same discipline as them.
  • The way the article was structured was that it had an abstract along with keywords of the article. Then it was pictures to be able to understand the article a little better throughout the article.
  • Provided a results section and an analysis
  • They stated their issues and stated future references to help improve their future studies.
  • Then the article came with a conclusion summing up the whole article and have references at the bottom in a certain for depending on the citation.

For Article number two, the conventions were Modelling; Digital human modelling; Physical design
  • Affordances was that all of the methods can produce realistic looking motions, but most have been tested with limited motion databases or have assumed a small number of linkage systems, normally three to five links.
    • Simulated motions must be based on real human motion data
    • Models should be computationally fast for real time simulations
    • Models should automatically adapt and use new motion data to become more robust in predicting novel motion situations of interest to a designer
  • Constraints was that the modeling has to be able to predict how different groups of people coordinate the movement of specific segments of the body when they are given the task they need to do.
    • Someone has to specify the intended hand motion trajectory, even if only a starting posture and an ending target location to which the hand is to reach, then a general whole-body motion prediction approach is required.
4. One thing that was very important about the two articles was the the methods they use to approach the experient and analysis. If you use the wrong methods or do the methods slighty wrong, your results will not come out correct. In engineering you have to be almost perfect at everything because that one thing that is too imperfect can mess up the whole project.

Nasir Bartley PB2A: Parts 3-5

Part 3: Turn your curiosities into questions: formulate 3-5 research questions. What might you like to investigate?
  1. How can robots assist humans in designing more efficient automobiles?
  2. How will automotive robotics impact the Industry?
  3. What are some possible dangers in robots taking jobs away from humans in the world?
Part 4: Suppose you wanted to find scholarly articles about these ideas using the library’s online database: what disciplinary keywords (i.e., search terms) could you use? List 5-10 keywords that could facilitate your search.
  1. Mechanical Engineering
  2. Automotive
  3. Design
  4. Robotics
  5. 3D Modeling
Part 5: Pinpoint 5 different scholarly journal articles about your topic(s). You don’t need to read any of them yet. Instead, simply provide a citation for each piece according to the formatting expectations of that discipline (MLA, APA, Chicago Style, etc.). Note: you’ll have to do some light background research to find out what citation style this major/discipline typically uses and how to format it appropriately. We’ll brainstorm some resources together that can help you do that.
  1. Improving robotic machining accuracy through experimental error investigation and modular compensation(ASME)
  2. Improving digital human modelling for proactive ergonomics in design(ASME)
  3. Impedance control of robots using voltage control strategy(ASME)

Nasir Bartley WP2 - PB2A: Parts 1-2

PART 1
  • Mechanical engineering deals with anything that moves, including the human body, a very complex machine. Mechanical engineers learn about materials, solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, control, instrumentation, design, and manufacturing to understand mechanical systems.

PART 2
  • One concept I find very intriguing is actually manufacturing these models to understand the mechanical systems.
  • A mechanical system manages power to accomplish a task that involves forces and movement.
  • If I had to devote a long time to studying something in this field, it will probably be:
    • Physics
    • Electrical Energy Conversion
    • Elements of Mechanical Design
    • Principles of Design

5
  • Reasons why there is violence in the fan base.
  • The perception fans have of the NFL and how the tackling rule is effecting it.
6
  • The NFL changed over the years.

For my WP1, I simply make an outline of how my paper should be. I put out what was the most important out of my paper and added the things that was less important to the outline. The first thing I added were my arguments of the paper. This is what my paper is gonna evolve around. The arguments I have can not only be the claim but it has to include textual evidence from a source that is related to the argument. The rebuttal is important because it shows that I know what the other side is thinking. Then I add the thesis and the conclusions to shape the paper up. Prioritizing all of the important and unimportant factors of my paper can help me finish the paper faster. This is because I spend more time on the important thing and get that out of the way in the shortest amount of time. Then I finish the unimportant thing fast because it doesn’t require me to think as hard. One thing I might change is my repetition of introducing my sources. I always say “According to the X” it makes the paper sound uninteresting saying that over and over.
